Xi (pronounced “crossy”) was launched by DOCOMO in December 2010 as Japan’s first wireless connectivity service based on LTE next-generation mobile technology.

LTE or Long Term Evolution is a communications standard for faster, higher-capacity and lower-latency communications than third-generation (3G) systems such as W-CDMA.
Initially named Super 3G by DOCOMO, and also known as “3.9G,” the technology was proposed as a significant upgrade from conventional 3G and a stepping stone to the eventual introduction of even more robust 4G mobile communication systems in the future.
Once mobile communication operators and vendors agreed on the concept, it was proposed to the 3GPP international standardization organization. Tests were carried out under the name LTE, and today mobile communication operators are introducing commercial LTE systems worldwide.

The “X” denotes both “connection” and “infinite possibility,” and the “i” both “individual user” and “innovation.” Xi creates connections that bring people together for innovation, reflecting DOCOMO’s goal of partnership with customers. The logo, which resembles the infinity symbol, aligns the letters “X” and “i” in a single stream to embody the unending bonds that organically link people, items and information.
