TOKYO, JAPAN, March 15, 2002 --- NTT DoCoMo, Inc. announced today that it is seeking approximately 1,000 monitors to take part in its wireless LAN trial service being held April 15-June 30, 2002. Applications to serve as monitor can be made via DoCoMo's website located at http://www.nttdocomo.co.jp from March 20 to March 31.
DoCoMo's wireless LAN trial service is based on IEEE802.11b, a standard issued by the U.S. Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), allowing use of 2.4GHz frequency band to realize transmission speeds of up to 11Mbps. To participate in the trial, monitors will need a laptop PC, PDA, or wireless LAN card that adopt WiFi, a certified standard compatible to IEEE802.11b. Using DoCoMo's wireless LAN trial service, they will be requested to access various Internet and online sites, including location resources, and try out live video streaming applications. Monitors, who are exempt from transmission charges, will then be asked to fill out questionnaires about usage. DoCoMo will analyze the various data generated from this trial to determine service marketability and solve any technical problems. The wireless LAN system will be implemented in 8 locations throughout Tokyo and its vicinity.
DoCoMo has been actively promoting mobile multimedia communications. Wireless LAN service development aims at boosting the variety of offerings DoCoMo provides, such as
, the world's first 3G mobile communications service, and other high-speed data transmission services.
