TOKYO, JAPAN, March 28, 2002 --- NTT DoCoMo, Inc. and its eight regional subsidiaries today announced new countermeasures, to begin on April 15, 2002, against forged-domain spam mail.
Since January this year, DoCoMo has been providing
users with the ability to restrict incoming e-mails to a maximum of 10 user-designated domains. Recently, however, spammers have become more devious and are sending spam mail using fake domains - forging other carriers' domain names - to pretend that the mail has originated from a cellular or PHS* phone. As a lot of i-mode users exchange e-mails between cellular or PHS phones, many have designated mobile phone carrier domains as legitimate origins.
To cope with this, DoCoMo will upgrade its "i-mode center" to block such forged-domain spam mail. Customers will thus no longer receive forged-domain spam mail.
Once the new countermeasures become effective, customers using the "domain-designation" function will no longer need to designate cellular or PHS phone company domains in order to receive mails originating from cellular or PHS phones. This will virtually expand the available number of designated domains, making it more convenient to users. Currently, about 1.56 million customers are using this function.
To take advantage of this new capability, users will need to make a setting in advance. This can be done via mobile phone, with no packet-transmission required.**
NTT DoCoMo will continue working to eliminate spam mails to maintain the convenience and usefulness of i-mode and other mobile internet services for all customers.
Note:
*Excluding ASTEL Group PHS phones.
**i-mode users using any kind of ISP mail-forwarding service must designate the ISP's domain, otherwise forwarded mail will be identified as "forged-domain spam mail" and blocked.
