NTT DoCoMo to Develop WAP 2.0-Compatible Dual Browser for FOMA Phones

R&D
TOKYO, JAPAN, May 23, 2002 --- NTT DoCoMo, Inc. announced today that it will develop new 3G handsets equipped with a dual browser capable of handling both -compatible HTML and XHTML Mobile Profile1 + WAP CSS2 mark-up languages. The company plans to introduce the handsets by the end of this year.

XHTML Mobile Profile1 + WAP CSS2 is the mark-up language for WAP2.0, the international standard for mobile internet services. As a member of the WAP Forum3 since the association's foundation, DoCoMo has been instrumental in paving the way for WAP2.0 standardization in order to stimulate the global market for mobile multimedia services. The company has been studying the feasibility of incorporating WAP2.0 technologies into its FOMA handsets since the WAP Forum announced standardized specifications on January 18 of this year.

Existing FOMA handsets are compatible with the transmission protocol of the WAP2.0, but not the language specifications. The next version of FOMA handsets will be fully compatible with all WAP2.0 specifications.

Moreover, because XHTML and HTML are functionally compatible, they enable i-mode content providers to take advantage of their vast know-how to develop content for next-series of WAP phones. Conversely, WAP content providers can also easily provide content to i-mode users with next version of FOMA handsets.

1XHTML (eXtensible HyperText Markup Language) Mobile Profile:
XHTML Mobile Profile has been adopted by the WAP Forum as the standardized WAP 2.0 language, and is based on XHTML 1.1. W3C (World Wide Web Consortium), an industry body that promotes standards for web-related technology, describes the language as a reformulation of HTML 4.0. XHTML is a language produced by reframing HTML in terms of XML (eXtensible Markup Language). XML has been formally recommended by the W3C.

2WAP CSS (Wireless Application Protocol Cascading Style Sheet)
WAP CSS is a language that automatically sets the layout and style of an XHTML document in WAP content.

3WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) Forum
Established in 1998, the WAP Forum is the industry association that is responsible for developing and fostering the growth of mobile internet de facto standard. Members include device manufacturers, carriers, software developers and other wireless related companies. DoCoMo has been a member of its Board of Directors since 1998. In August 2001, the forum adopted the basic concept jointly proposed by DoCoMo and Ericsson for WAP2.0 specifications.
