NTT DoCoMo Takes Steps to Relieve Mobile Phone Congestion During 2002 FIFA World Cup

Others
TOKYO, JAPAN, May 24, 2002 --- NTT DoCoMo, Inc. and five of its subsidiaries announced today that they are taking measures to handle the massive communications traffic that is expected during the 2002 FIFA World CupTM, which will be held at various locations around Japan from May 31.

As a first step toward relieving congestion, the companies have boosted the capacity of their base stations located adjacent to the stadiums by approximately 150%.

DoCoMo's proprietary In-Building Mobile Communication System (IMCS) has been installed at several major sports facilities and Yokohama Media Center to ensure stable communications inside structures that could experience massive traffic.

The companies will also provide stadiums with portable mobile stations on days when matches take place. These portable mobile stations will be used a total of 32 times during the World Cup. In addition, DoCoMo will dispatch engineers to facilities, including base stations located near stadiums up to 600 times, to make certain that equipment and networks run smoothly.

Heavy communications traffic is expected to occur before and after games and during half time periods. To prevent the DoCoMo networks from overloading during peak times, the company may also place certain restrictions on mobile phone usage around the stadiums. Accordingly, the customers located outside of the stadiums will not be affected by the network congestion.
