NTT DoCoMo to Introduce Anti-scam Function Enabling Users to Register and Block Offending Phone Numbers

Products & Services
TOKYO, JAPAN, October 10, 2002-NTT DoCoMo, Inc. and its eight regional subsidiaries announced today that they will introduce a new function that will allow users to block "wangiri" (one-ring) calls, starting October 31, 2002. The move is a part of ongoing anti-scam countermeasures DoCoMo is taking to eliminate the massive number of offensive calls being placed.

The new function allows users to register up to 19 offending telephone numbers on a dedicated DoCoMo network. The network will immediately intercept calls placed from these numbers and play a recording that informs scammers that calls will not be accepted by the receiving party. As the scammer will be charged a connection fee, the service is expected to deter offenders from placing "wangiri" calls.

The function is available for all DoCoMo mobile phones and satellite phones, except , PHS, "Pre-Call" prepaid, and other phones that do not offer one touch dialing. Offending numbers are registered by dialing 0-"*"00-9999. After detecting a dial tone, press 0 and enter a registration number between "*"01 and "*"19. Next, input the number to be blocked and press the call button. Registration is complete when a tone is heard. Only numbers that have been placed from fixed line phones can be registered and blocked.
