TOKYO, JAPAN, July 2, 2002 - NTT DoCoMo, Inc. and its eight regional subsidiaries announced today that DoCoMo will offer a new feature enabling
users to block spam mail (unsolicited e-mail advertisements).
New anti-spam legislation, the LAW ON TOPICS INCLUDING THE APPROPRIATENESS OF SENDING SPECIFIED E-MAIL MESSAGES (Law No. 26 of 2002) and the LAW FOR PARTIAL AMENDMENT TO THE SPECIFIC COMMERCIAL TRANSACTION LAW (Law No. 28 of 2002) took effect on July 1, 2002. The new laws require, with some exceptions, that senders of advertisements begin the subject line of each mail message with the Japanese kanji characters (transliterated as mishodaku kokoku, which means unsolicited advertisement) plus the mark
. The message must also include the sender's name, postal address, e-mail address, and the like, so that a recipient can send back an "opt-out" request. Once a user has thus responded, the sender must not send any further e-mail to that address.
DoCoMo will maximize the benefits to its customers of this new legislation by enabling users to automatically block all e-mails with mishodaku kokoku
at the head of the subject line. Users will be able to select this new anti-spam option by accessing a designated website link from the official i-mode portal site, i Menu. The new option will be available in October; the transmission fee for selecting it will be free of charge.
Since January DoCoMo has been providing a number of anti-spam options including a function that allows
i-mode users to restrict incoming e-mail by blocking mail from - or accepting mail only from - designated sources (domains or e-mail addresses). DoCoMo will also improve this feature by increasing the maximum number of such sources to a total of 20 (currently 10) in October.
i-mode users will also be able to take advantage of all i-mode anti-spam options in October.
DoCoMo will continue its anti-spam drive to maximize the convenience and utility of Japan's mobile internet environment.
