TOKYO, JAPAN, May 21, 2002 --- NTT DoCoMo, Inc. announced today that its " D504i" and "mova F504i" handsets equipped for enhanced will be sold at all DoCoMo sales channels from May 24, 2002.The new 504i phones represent the first series of DoCoMo PDC-based handsets compatible with enhanced i-mode, which features packet data transmission speeds of up to 28.8 Kbps, three times faster than conventional PDC-based i-mode. Both models support Java Archive (JAR) applications of up to 30 Kb and associated data of up to 100 Kb per application. The conventional 503i model, by comparison, supports JAR applications and data of up to 10 Kb each. The handsets are equipped with three-dimensional polygon engines for 3D video display. In addition, the models are compatible with JPEG files as well as 32 chord ringing tones. As a result, content providers can develop richer content for i ppliTM, the Java-enabled i-mode service. As of May 24, 135 i ppli sites of 31 providers are expected to be offering compatible content.The new handsets can be used to receive e-mail or make calls while simultaneously using an i ppli application. The screen of an i ppli application can be left on, for example, to receive automatically updated breaking news.The 504i model is also equipped for infrared (IrDA) connection with other handsets to exchange data such as phone numbers, email addresses, and i ppli game data. Connection is also possible with other IrDA-equipped devices, such as POS cash registers and multimedia devices.A total of 252 i-mode-dedicated emoticons are available with the phones, including 76 emoticons newly created for the 504i series. Retail pricing of both models is open (unfixed). The standard accessory kits, which include battery pack, AC adaptor and desktop holder, cost 7,700 yen for the D504i and 6,400 yen for the F504i.
