TOKYO, JAPAN, June 20, 2002 --- NTT DoCoMo, Inc. announced today that it will launch wireless LAN service, dubbed "Mzone," from July 1, 2002.
DoCoMo has been providing wireless LAN trial service to monitors since this April to analyze the technology and collect information on usage. After assessing results of the trial, DoCoMo has decided that Mzone is commercially viable.
Mzone service will initially be implemented in nine locations throughout Tokyo and its vicinity. DoCoMo plans call for the continued expansion of the Mzone wireless LAN service area.
Application for the service, which is 2,000 yen per month (including unlimited internet access), can be made via DoCoMo's website at http://www.wlan.nttdocomo.co.jp. No sign-up fee is necessary. Users can also apply for the service at three DoCoMo branch offices (Marunouchi, Shinjuku and Shibuya), where a sign-up fee of 1,000 yen will be required.
DoCoMo's wireless LAN service is based on IEEE802.11b, a standard issued by the U.S. Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), allowing use of 2.4GHz frequency band to realize transmission speed of up to 11Mbps. To use the service, users need a wireless LAN card that adopts WiFi, a certified standard compatible to IEEE802.11.b. Media Access Control Address is adopted as the hardware number, and user ID or password is used for user identification.
DoCoMo has been actively promoting mobile multimedia communications. The introduction of wireless LAN service boosts the variety of offerings the company provides, such as
3G service and other high-speed data transmission services.
In accordance with official requirements, DoCoMo and its subsidiaries have notified the Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Post and Telecommunications of the new service.
