NTT DoCoMo Facilities Win ISO 14001 Certification

TOKYO, JAPAN, April 3, 2001 --- NTT DoCoMo, Inc. has received ISO 14001 certification for its headquarters and research and development center on March 30, 2001, the company announced today. The ISO 14001 certification, which is an international standard for environmental management systems, was issued by the Japan Management Association Quality Assurance Center (JMAQARC).

NTT DoCoMo's Procurement and Supply Department was awarded the same certification in November 1998. DoCoMo aims to bring all its branch offices and affiliated organizations into similar compliance by the end of fiscal 2001.

Details concerning the newly certified facilities are as follows:

Facilities: NTT DoCoMo's Headquarters located in Nagata-cho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo and R&D Center located in Hikarino-oka, Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture Areas of Certification: Administrative duties of headquarters, research and development activities conducted at R&D center.

In keeping with one of its primary goals, which is to support the creation of an environment-friendly society, NTT DoCoMo continues to strive to incorporate environmental protection into all its business operations. This is being done in accordance with DoCoMo's Corporate Environmental Policy.

The DoCoMo Corporate Environmental Policy: On June 1, DoCoMo unveiled a corporate environmental policy providing guidelines for the activities of the entire group. The policy is comprised of a "Basic Philosophy" and "Basic Guidelines."

"Basic Philosophy" Members of the DoCoMo Group will strive to ensure that their business activities remain in harmony with environmental interests, and encourage lifestyles that respect the world's ecosystem.

"Basic Guidelines" 1. Fulfill responsibilities as a corporate citizen. 2. Build systems that makes society more sensitive to people and nature. 3. Contribute to global environmental protection.

DoCoMo's major environmental initiatives:

1. Fulfill responsibilities as a corporate citizen.

Green Purchasing - DoCoMo Group members are giving priority to environmental considerations in their procurement of materials. Development of more compact phone terminals that consume less power. Recycling of rechargeable batteries and handsets: As of fiscal 1999, DoCoMo had recovered approximately 5.9 million phones and adapters and batteries. "Green Building Design Policy"- DoCoMo is promoting the introduction of environmentally friendly building design concepts for all its own and affiliated facilities. "Green R&D Guideline"- DoCoMo is promoting environmental friendly research and development activities. Paper Recycling - DoCoMo is promoting the use of recycled paper for its instruction manuals, product catalogs, paper bags etc. Using biodegradable phytogenic film for the windows of billing envelopes.

2. Build systems that make corporate society more sensitive to people and nature.

Introduction of e-billing system reduces 72t papers*. *calculation is based on the assumption that 500,000 customers use e-billing system.

3. Contribute to global environmental protection.

DoCoMo has been participating in an ecological survey aimed at preserving the albatross, a bird species threatened with extinction. DoCoMo is providing an image transmission system that utilizes mobile satellite communications technology to perform remote observations. DoCoMo Wood- greenery program This re-forestation project has been carried out in Yamaguchi, Kanagawa, Hokkaido, and Kagawa prefectures. DoCoMo is targeting nine more areas for re-forestation within the next five years. DoCoMo supports numerous environmental programs and volunteer activities.
