NTT DoCoMo to start international roaming service in Europe, Asia, Africa

TOKYO, JAPAN, January 22, 2001--Starting on January 29, 2001, NTT DoCoMo, Inc. will begin marketing a dual-mode cellular phone which can used in Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania. The "N601wg" is capable of international roaming as it incorporates both the PDC and GSM* mobile communication systems. PDC is offered in Japan by NTT DoCoMo, whereas the GSM system is widely used in Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania. Customers will be able to buy or rent the N601wg for use in the aforementioned areas. Users will be given two phone numbers: one for PDC and the other for GSM.


*GSM is a digital mobile communications system that is compatible with international roaming service, SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) cards etc. The system has been adopted by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) and is available throughout Europe.

International roaming service charges for the N601wg phone are as follows:

1) International roaming service contract handling fee (excluding tax) 3,000 yen
(An additional 3,000 yen will be charged to those signing up for DoCoMo cellular phone service for the first time.)
2) Basic monthly charge for international roaming service free
(Note: The basic monthly charge for normal cellular phone service in Japan is applicable.)
3) Dialing charges (per minute) for international roaming service when the caller is outside Japan are as follows:

Note:
  1. *International call indicates the dialing charge from the country where the call is received.
  2. The aforementioned charges may fluctuate or be altered without prior notice depending on the country, mobile phone operator, time and currency exchange rate.
  3. *Incoming call charges include call transfer charges from Hong Kong to Japan. Calling charges from Japan to Hong Kong will be billed by an international telecommunication service provider.


NTT DoCoMo's normal fee plan will apply when customers use their phones in Japan.

Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania Area where 900MHz GSM service is offered by Hutchison Telephone Company and its roaming partners. (about 110 countries and regions.)



International roaming service subscribers can use GSM data transmission service if they apply for it. Exclusive data transmission kit is necessary.


Note: A basic charge for data transmission service is not required. The communication charge is the same as the calling charge.
