TOKYO, JAPAN, January 18, 2001-NTT DoCoMo, Inc. announced today that it will launch a new i-mode service based on Sun Microsystem's Java*1 technology. The new service, dubbed "i
ppli", will be launched on January 26, 2001 and will be available throughout Japan wherever packet communication services are offered.
NTT DoCoMo will market two new phones, P503i and F503i, from January 26 that are compatible with the new i
ppli service. Users can download and store a variety of dynamic applications via the i-mode network using 503i series phones.
By the January 26 launch date, a total of 38 site with 32 menu will be available exclusively for i
ppli users on the i-mode network. Service applications include video games, online financial services etc. The new 503i series phones also feature Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)*2 Protocol, which provides cryptography for the safe transmission of personal information (e.g., credit card numbers). It is expected that the new phones will be used for financial service and other e-commerce businesses.
Two main notable functions of the service have been realized by the introduction of Java technology. They are as follows:
