NTT DoCoMo to Transfer Technologies for i-mode-like Services in Europe

Partnerships

TOKYO, JAPAN, November 7, 2001 --- NTT DoCoMo, Inc., Dutch holding company Koninklijke KPN NV (KPN) and KPN's wholly owned subsidiary KPN Mobile N.V. today reached an agreement under which DoCoMo will transfer and license technologies to KPN Mobile for the launch of mobile internet services in the Netherlands and Belgium. The services will be similar to NTT DoCoMo's popular i-mode services currently available in Japan.

The three companies have been working together to introduce an i-mode-like service in the European market. Their efforts in this regard are beginning to take shape. Today's agreements are expected to promote both the rapid proliferation of mobile multimedia services and the early realization of 3G services in the European market.

Under the licensing pact, NTT DoCoMo will provide KPN Mobile with parents, service know-how and technologies needed to launch i-mode-like services on the Global Packet Radio Service (GPRS) network and later on third-generation (3G) mobile networks.

The pact will remain valid from November 7, 2001 to January 1, 2012, during which time NTT DoCoMo will collect licensing fees.

KPN Mobile will sublicense the technologies to its wholly owned subsidiaries KPN Mobile The Nederlands B.V. (KPN-M-NL) and KPN Orange Belgium NV/SA (KPN Orange). DoCoMo owns a 15% stake in KPN Mobile.

KPN Mobile's subsidiaries will introduce i-mode-like services in their respective markets, starting from the second quarter of 2002 . Subscribers will enjoy a variety of mobile internet services and contents, including stock price, ticket reservations, restaurant guides, on-line games and more, using cellular phones equipped with dual browsers for i-mode-compatible HTML and WML1.X.
