NTT DoCoMo to Expand "FOMA" 3G Service Area

TOKYO, JAPAN, November 7, 2001---NTT DoCoMo, Inc. announced today that its FOMA third-generation mobile phone service will be made available in the southern part of the Kanto region surrounding Tokyo and Yokohama beginning December 1. FOMA* service is currently available in the area within Route 16, the national highway encircling central Tokyo.

Regional companies DoCoMo Tokai and DoCoMo Kansai will also launch FOMA service in their respective markets on the same day. Both companies today submitted service-launch applications and billing-plan notifications to the Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications.

Initially, DoCoMo Tokai will offer service in major markets of the Tokai region including Nagoya, while DoCoMo Kansai will offer service in major markets of Kyoto, Osaka and Kobe in the Kansai region.

The FOMA service area will expand to virtually every major city in Japan by spring 2002. NTT DoCoMo will expand its FOMA service area to the major markets of the northern Kanto region and parts of the Koshinetsu region (Yamanashi, Nagano, and Niigata). FOMA service will also be launched in major markets by DoCoMo Hokkaido, DoCoMo Tohoku, DoCoMo Hokuriku, DoCoMo Chugoku, DoCoMo Shikoku, and DoCoMo Kyushu.

*FOMA (Freedom of Mobile multimedia Access) is the name used in Japan for NTT DoCoMo's 3G service.
