NTT DoCoMo to establish representative office in Beijing, China

TOKYO, JAPAN, June 27, 2000---NTT DoCoMo, Inc. (NTT DoCoMo) will open a representative office in Beijing, China today to strengthen ties with local wireless operators and other telecommunications related organizations. Noboru Sano, 51, has been appointed first general manager of the representative office. The office will actively establish mutual cooperative relations with Chinese mobile communications operators and conduct technical exchanges and joint studies with research institutes and universities. It will also contribute to the promotion of mobile multimedia in the Chinese market, and represent NTT DoCoMo by gathering and distributing information and opinions among Chinese telecommunications operators, standardization bodies etc.

NTT DoCoMo has already been working with China's telecom industry by conducting technical exchanges aimed at promoting the next-generation mobile communications system, IMT-2000. The company has also been exchanging information and ideas with major Chinese universities and promoting joint experiments regarding W-CDMA technology.

Interchange between China and NTT DoCoMo regarding IMT-2000

(1) Technical exchanges regarding IMT-2000

1996 March Exchange of information, opinions and technologies with China's former Ministry of Post and Telecommunications (currently called Ministry of Information Industry), wireless operators, and telecommunications-related universities begins. 1997 October NTT DoCoMo participates in WirelessComm China '97 held in Beijing; exhibits W-CDMA transmission system. November NTT DoCoMo hosts next-generation wireless technology meeting in Tokyo. Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications participates. 1998 January NTT DoCoMo exchanges opinions with China's Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, China's IMT-2000 evaluation group and telecommunications technology specialists at the 3rd Generation Mobile Comm. Symposium held in Beijing. 1999 June Basic agreement on standardization of CDMA technology concluded at Toronto meeting of operator standardization group (chaired by China Mobile Communications Corp.). The group was organized to promote standardization of IMT-2000 wireless transmission technology. November Participation in P.T./Wireless Comm Beijing '99 held in Beijing. NTT DoCoMo displays prototype of W-CDMA system equipment and Java-enabled i-mode phone.

(2) Joint testing of W-CDMA in China promoted by Ministry of Information Industry of China, CATT, Ericsson, and DoCoMo

1998 First quarter Joint feasibility study to evaluate establishment of W-CDMA experimental system in China begins. 1999 June NTT DoCoMo, CATT and Ericsson sign MoU to launch joint W-CDMA trial. November Demonstration of W-CDMA system jointly conducted with CATT and Ericsson at P.T./Wireless Comm Beijing '99. 2000 April Progress of joint W-CDMA trial is reported by CATT, Ericsson and DoCoMo at W-CDMA joint trial seminar held in Beijing.
