NTT DoCoMo earlier invested in KPN Mobile N.V. for the purpose of deploying mobile multimedia services, such as its i-mode service, as well as IMT-2000 services, in Europe. NTT DoCoMo signed today's joint venture pact with KPN Mobile in order to accelerate its expansion in the European market.
If both companies formally decide to establish a joint venture, NTT DoCoMo will conclude a licensing agreement to render assistance in i-mode related technologies.
Outline of MoU regarding mobile Internet business
1. Purpose of MoU
NTT DoCoMo and KPN Mobile, Europe's leading cellular phone operator, will consider providing i-mode-like mobile Internet services with the intent of accelerating their dissemination of mobile multimedia in Europe. NTT DoCoMo and KPN Mobile are strengthening their existing alliance while jointly exploring future business opportunities.
2. Points to be considered by NTT DoCoMo and KPN Mobile regarding JV
- Business plan
Both companies will discuss a business plan, marketing strategies and system configurations in order to provide services for a wide range of European mobile phone operators. The two firms will jointly consider the following items when formulating specific business plans for the JV:
- Mobile Internet server operation
- Application/service development
- Negotiations with content providers
- Terminal functions planning and design
- Brand development etc.
- Business area
- Company structure and shareholders' equity ratio
- Additional strategic partners

About NTT DoCoMo
