NTT DoCoMo receives approval for IMT-2000 service

TOKYO, June 30, 2000---NTT DoCoMo, Inc. and its eight affiliated companies have received approval from the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications to launch IMT-2000, a next-generation mobile communication service. The ministry also granted DoCoMo preliminary approval to license radio stations that will be used to provide the service in Japan.

With the Ministry's approval, the company will step up efforts to prepare for the inauguration of IMT-2000 service, including establishing networks.

The tentative schedule for introducing the new IMT-2000 service is as follows:

1. Start date
Around the end of May, 2001: NTT DoCoMo
Around December 2001:NTT DoCoMo Tokai, NTT DoCoMo Kansai
Around April 2002: NTT DoCoMo Hokkaido, NTT DoCoMo Tohoku, NTT DoCoMo Hokuriku, NTT DoCoMo Chugoku, NTT DoCoMo Shikoku, NTT DoCoMo Kyushu

2. Initial service area
Tokyo (23-ward area)
Yokohama City
Kawasaki City

3. Wireless access system

DS-CDMA*1 (W-CDMA)*2
*1 DS-CDMA:Direct Spread CDMA
*2 W-CDMA:Wideband-CDMA

4. Frequency band
2 GHz band
