NTT DoCoMo to Launch PHS Video Content Distribution Service

TOKYO, JAPAN November 29, 2000 --- NTT DoCoMo, Inc. (NTT DoCoMo) today applied to the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications for permission to launch its "M-stage visual" video content distribution service for Personal Handyphone System (PHS) mobile phone users. This is the world's first wireless video content distribution service using MPEG4* technology.

The service will enable users to download or stream video content such as movies and music as well as news, sports and other content, via NTT DoCoMo's "mopera" mobile Internet service. The menu includes some 47 channels of providers offering more than 130 sub-menus of content (as of December 8, 2000).

Initially, the service will be accessible only with "eggy" terminals, which are connected to PHS phones.

The service will start on December 8, 2000 and will be available throughout Japan wherever PHS 64/32K service is offered.

Charges will be as follows:

Basic subscription for M-stage visual service: 200 yen per month
(beginning June 2001)
PHS communication charge: 15 yen per minute
Content fee: varies by content
  • Basic subscription to the PHS service is required to use M-stage visual service.
  • There is no basic subscription charge until the end of May 2001


*MPEG4: a video coding standard adopted for next-generation mobile communication system

The initial "M" stands for such words as multimedia, mobile and movie. "Stage" represents a new level of service to which the public has attached high expectations.
