NTT DoCoMo, SK Telecom Launch W-CDMA Field Trials in South Korea

Partnerships
TOKYO, JAPAN, January 27, 2000 --- NTT Mobile Communications Network, Inc. (NTT DoCoMo) and SK Telecom Co., Ltd. announced today that both companies have jointly launched Wideband-CDMA (W-CDMA) field trials, a technology for a third-generation telecommunications system (IMT-2000), in South Korea. This is the first time that such tests have been conducted in the country.

NTT DoCoMo signed an agreement with SK Telecom in February 1999 regarding joint field trials based on W-CDMA technology. Since then, NTT DoCoMo has offered technical assistance to carry out W-CDMA indoor tests and the joint field trials with SK Telecom.

Today, NTT DoCoMo and SK Telecom successfully conducted a commemorative video conference call utilizing the W-CDMA field trial system in South Korea and the indoor video conference system in Japan. President Tachikawa held a conversation with President Cho who was riding in an automobile equipped with a W-CDMA field trial system mobile terminal. It was the first trial to feature video conferencing in a moving vehicle at 128kbps. The presidents of both companies enjoyed high quality voice and image transmission service enabled by W-CDMA.

SK Telecom and NTT DoCoMo will strengthen their cooperative ties so that a W-CDMA-based IMT-2000 service is available in time for the 2002 World Cup in South Korea.
