London, October 8, 1999 --- Representatives of eight leading wireless communications operators voiced their collective support of mobile multimedia through the establishment today of the Joint Initiative toward Mobile Multimedia (JIMM), an operator's forum with the objective of seeking common technical approaches to enable more rapid development of envisioned mobile multimedia technologies and capabilities. JIMM members -- AT&T Wireless Services, Inc., British Telecom, Deutsche Telekom MobilNet GmbH, France Telecom, NTT Mobile Communications Network, Inc. (NTT DoCoMo), Singapore Telecom Mobile Pte Ltd, SK Telecom Co., Ltd., and Vodafone AirTouch Plc -- realize the importance mobile multimedia will have as wireless systems around the world migrate toward so called 3G or Third Generation wireless systems. While the JIMM has strong representation from all 4 major second generation (2G) digital systems (GSM, TDMA, PDC, CDMA), the members seek to harmonize technical approaches to deploying services in 3G, to allow customers to have global access to the best services and capabilities. 3G represents a significant step for wireless data communications, in which JIMM feels a common platform for mobile multimedia will be an important aspect, and one which will be significant to the service offerings of the JIMM members. 3G is also not too far away, with JIMM members all planning to introduce services and applications based on 3G technologies in the first few years of the 21st century. Evolved 2G technologies are already starting to introduce data to wireless subscribers, and will change the very nature of personal wireless communications. Expanding upon voice communications, JIMM seeks to fully utilize the 3G technologies by expanding and creating a vast variety of services and capabilities which will allow customers to truly experience mobile multimedia anytime and anywhere. For JIMM, mobile multimedia refers to more than web browsing, but refers to the vast array of services from voice and short messaging, to file transfers and Internet/Intranet access, to mobile video conferencing, e-commerce, mobile banking, and music and video downloading. JIMM realizes that even with the successful harmonization in the 3G standardization process, operators still have a considerable challenge to ensure quick and reliable service introduction based on a common platform, to accommodate the fast developing and global customer needs in the area of mobile multimedia. 3G technologies will allow operators to deploy high speed packet data to a vast number of customers. JIMM will seek to promote a common platform of applications and services, based on the new 3G technologies, to be available to meet the customer demand for global mobile multimedia.
