| NTT Mobile Communications Network, Inc. today filed applications to the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications of Japan for approval for the provision of an international call service based on service agreement between NTT DoCoMo and AT&T Corporation, following the August 13, 1998 registration of a Special Type II Telecommunications Carrier. The service enables NTT DoCoMo to provide the international call service as its own service resulting in greater customer satisfaction.
NTT DoCoMo provides this service allying with AT&T and its subsidiary AT&T Wireless Services, Inc. A network has been established by directly connecting NTT DoCoMo's gateway switch to AT&T Wireless's gateway switch by international leased circuit. The international call service will be inaugurated as part of the company's seamless global service in response to diversified customer needs for cellular phones. NTT DoCoMo has energetically contributed to standardization activities of Wideband CDMA (W-CDMA) technology, a leading candidate of IMT-2000. In light of the accelerated popularization of cellular phones worldwide, the increased number of international travelers and the globalization of business activities, the introduction of the technology will contribute to the improvement of customer convenience by establishing seamless networks and provide services equivalent to or better than those available in Japan no matter where the customer is. Mr. Shiro Tsuda, executive vice president of NTT DoCoMo said, "We believe it is the telecommunications operator's responsibility to provide services that meet various customer needs. With this service, NTT DoCoMo's customers who make calls from Japan to the United States will receive a single bill that contains both domestic call fees and international call fees." In addition, deregulation has greatly reduced barriers in the telecommunications industry, and "one-stop shopping" has been widely introduced. NTT DoCoMo is prepared to provide a variety of services to meet customer demand for cellular phone services. Please see the attachment for an outline of the international call service. |
