NTT DoCoMo to Launch Outdoor System Tests of W-CDMA

R&D
NTT Mobile Communications Network, Inc. (NTT DoCoMo; Keiji Tachikawa, President; headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo) announced today that it has launched outdoor tests of Wideband CDMA (W-CDMA) for a third-generation mobile communications system (IMT-2000). NTT DoCoMo began the tests after obtaining approval from the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications for operating a radio station for outdoor tests under the frequency band for IMT-2000.

NTT DoCoMo has conducted indoor tests of the W-CDMA system since April 1998 at its R&D facility located at Yokosuka Research Park (YRP) in Kanagawa Prefecture. Now that the necessary approval has been obtained, the firm will launch comprehensive outdoor tests of the system.

In October 1996, NTT DoCoMo successfully field-tested W-CDMA transmissions at 2Mbps. This time it will conduct not only transmission tests, but also simulated tests of the system itself under conditions of actual use. This will include the testing of various transmission services and applications.

Based on the results of the tests, NTT DoCoMo will continue cooperating with efforts to establish a global standard for IMT-2000.

Please see the attachment for an overview of the outdoor system tests.
