15.9 billion) held a Technology Conference for Next-Generation Mobile Communications Technologies on November 21, 1997 in Tokyo. The event attracted the participation of 14 mobile operators and institutions from nine countries in the Asia and Oceania regions. The conference started at 1:30 pm and finished at 5:00 pm. Following a key note address by President Ohboshi of NTT DoCoMo, seven organizations representing six countries made presentations including Telecom Italia Mobile, which took part in the meeting as a special guest. After an active question and answer session and discussion of the presentations, the participants unanimously agreed to adopt the points listed below as the product of the conference. The participants also agreed to continue technology conference of this kind in the future.
(1) To agree on the basic requirements of a next-generation mobile communications system (IMT-2000)
(2) IMT-2000 should ultimately be introduced as a global system.
(3) Given their potential and market size, Asia and Oceania are able to take a leadership role in the development of next-generation mobile communications and make a contribution to global standardization.
(4) Wideband CDMA (W-CDMA) is the most promising candidate for the IMT-2000 radio interface.
(5) It is reasonable to use the evolved versions of existing networks as the core network for IMT-2000.
(6) It is important to keep the IPR royalty as low as possible in order to achieve a global system.
(7) As a first step, a forum for IMT-2000 shall be established with the wide participation of mainly mobile operators to make practical and effective contributions to global standardization and to facilitate further cooperation with other areas in the world.
