Announcing the Cooperation with Telecom Finland LTD for a Next-Generation Mobile Communications System

Partnerships
NTT Mobile Communications Network, Inc. (NTT DoCoMo; Kouji Ohboshi, President; Headquarters: Tokyo, Japan), and Telecom Finland LTD (Aulis Salin, President; Headquarters: Helsinki, Finland) have agreed to promote mutual cooperation for a next-generation mobile communications system (IMT-2000) and have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to that effect.

1. Outline of the MoU

1) Both companies will make a joint effort to achieve global standardization for IMT-2000 characterized by the features stated in items 2) and3) below.

2) Both companies will support Wideband CDMA (W-CDMA) proposed by the ETSI-Group for the radio access scheme of IMT-2000. Through the discussions between the Association of Radio Industries and Business (ARIB) and the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), ARIB's W-CDMA proposal has become identical to the concept promoted by the ETSI-Group.

3) For the IMT-2000 network, both companies will support a network based on the evolved GSM network, while taking into account the interface with the PDC network.

NTT DoCoMo firmly believes the activities based on this MoU will contribute toward the standardization initiatives at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the Association of Radio Industries and Businesses (ARIB), the Telecommunication Technology Committee (TTC), and the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). Telecom Finland LTD, the largest fixed and mobile communication operator in Finland, is well known as one of the pioneers in the mobile communication field. The sales of Telecom Finland reached about FIM 6.4 billion (about 158.3 billion yen) in 1996. Finland is known as the country where the highest penetration globally has been reached. The current penetration is 40% of the total population.
