3G

Third-generation digital mobile phone system standardized by ITU-T. Also known as IMT-2000. Data rates include 144 kbps for fast-moving terminals, 384 kbps for slow-moving terminals and 2 Mbps for stationary terminals. NTT DOCOMO uses the W-CDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) system (IMT-DS: International Mobile Telecommunications Direct Spread), while European operators use UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System), an international standard that added modulation schemes. Other systems also recognized as 3G include CDMA2000, DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) and EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution).
