DOCOMO to Launch Xperia Handset in Japan

The docomo Smartphone Xperia™, manufactured by Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications and known as the Xperia™ X10 outside Japan, was unveiled on January 21 in advance of its Japanese launch in April.
At a press conference, DOCOMO President and CEO Ryuji Yamada introduced the company's second Android handset as a tool for all-new entertainment experiences combining advanced communication with high-spec performance.
Coinciding with the launch, the company will introduce the "docomo market" mobile web portal for smartphone users. The portal will be a first-of-a-kind, user-friendly site to help Japanese consumers discover new smartphone experiences, including applications from around the world, as well as original content and applications from DOCOMO.
The new handset features two highly intuitive signature applications from Sony Ericsson: Mediascape, which organizes music, photos and videos, and Timescape™, which conveniently aggregates communication histories with individuals, including mail, voice calls, social media and photos.
The smartphone intelligently recognizes up to five faces from photos stored in the phonebook and automatically tags faces in photos taken with the handset's 8.1-megapixel camera. The user can make phone calls or send emails by simply touching a person's tag in a photo.
The docomo Smartphone Xperia™ is compatible with FOMA™ HIGH-SPEED, DOCOMO's HSUPA/HSDPA data-communication service for extra-fast 2.0 Mbps uplinks and 7.2 Mbps downlinks (theoretical maximums). It also is equipped for Wi-Fi®, uploading videos and photos to YouTube™ and Picasa™, and downloading applications from Android Market™, allowing users to co-create an experience that is entirely unique to them. Google™ services such as Google search, Google Maps™ and Gmail™ are preloaded.
