Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) and DOCOMO took part in ITU TELECOM WORLD 2009, held in Geneva, Switzerland from October 5 to 9. The NTT Group booth featured exhibitions and demonstrations, including the NTT Group's vision of the future. NTT exhibited next-generation network optical access technologies, such as GE-PON low-friction indoor optical-fi ber cable, as well as ICT services for the home, high-quality IP telephones, and more. DOCOMO presented Long Term Evolution (LTE), along with its latest handsets, concierge-like "i-concier" service, and intuitive search/navigation based on the user's location and phone's directional orientation. DOCOMO also exhibited user-friendly initiatives such as mobile phones incorporating universal designs, a solar-powered waterproof handset and a mobile phone prototype using surplus wood.
At the event, DOCOMO President and CEO Ryuji Yamada gave a talk on "Globalization and Localization" in which he said that "infrastructure technologies at the very bottom layer are rapidly decreasing in cost while they increase in performance as globalization progresses." He also mentioned that as the mobile world moves from 2G to 3G, and then to LTE, nation-specifi c protocols will be integrated into international ones and thereby unleash the economics of scale. In the upper layer, however, Yamada said that globalization is not likely to be as smooth since it is affected by differences in culture, preferences and circumstances in each country. "As a mobile operator we are able to grasp customer needs and trends in both the upper and lower layers. For this reason, I believe mobile operators are expected to play the role of ‘glocalization,' which is to adapt global services and applications to local demand."
