DOCOMO and Tata Teleservices Limited (TTSL) announced on June 10 the impending rollout of a pan-India GSM service under the new TATA DOCOMO brand. TTSL, 26% of which is owned by DOCOMO, launched the service two weeks later in southern India and is now gradually expanding coverage nationwide.

Toshinari Kunieda, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of DOCOMO's Global Business Division, said: "We have provided technical inputs to make the TATA DOCOMO GSM network world-class. DOCOMO shall bring to India the various products and services it offers in Japan, such as i-mode™, location-based services and mobile payments, giving TATA DOCOMO customers a flavor of tomorrow. We also are working with Tata Teleservices on future technologies, like 3G and Long-Term Evolution."
Also introduced with the GSM service was TTSL's version of i-channel™, DOCOMO's convenient application for news updates that scroll across the phone's standby screen and link easily to full articles.
TATA DOCOMO's GSM service has gained momentum rapidly, with subscriptions surpassing their quarterly targets just one month after the rollout. The prospects look bright in India's fast-growing mobile market, where total subscribers are increasing by more than 10 million on a net monthly basis.
