Mobile Wallet Service Pockets 5th Year of Success
DOCOMO's Osaifu-Keitai⢠("mobile wallet") service, which turns a mobile phone into a powerfully convenient tool for services and mobile payments, celebrated its fifth birthday in Japan on July 10.
Osaifu-Keitai is widely used for mobile payments to stores, taxis and vending machines, debit payments at commuter-station gates installed with super-fast readers, wireless uploads of service and product information, coupons in retail shops, personal identification and even electronic door key.
Nearly 130 DOCOMO phone models are compatible with the service, which is enabled by a contactless IC smart chip embedded in the phone. The number of handsets in the market configured for Osaifu-Keitai now exceeds 35 million, or more than 60% of DOCOMO's customer base.
