- A Vision and Roadmap for NTT DoCoMo's Advance from 3G to 4G -

HSDPA and 4G (Part 1)

NTT DoCoMo's HSDPA Developments
Nearly five years have passed since NTT DoCoMo began its FOMA 3G service in October 2001. 3G services, at that time known as "the next generation", are being widely accepted with the number of FOMA subscribers exceeding 20 million as of December 29, 2005.

Mobile phone carriers are already preparing for the next "next generation", and NTT DoCoMo -working in conjunction with terminal manufacturers- has developed prototype terminals in compliance with the new HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) packet transmission technology, or 3.5G technology. These prototypes were exhibited and highly regarded at the 3GSM World Congress 2006 held in Barcelona in February 2006.

3.5G: Enabling High-Speed communication Services and efficient use of Tight Frequency Conditions

The Introduction of HSDPA which enables faster data communications than with the present FOMA service is close to hand. HSDPA is a high-speed mobile data communications standard that expands the already-existing W-CDMA, and is divided into twelve categories achieving data rates from 0.9 Mbps to approximately 14 Mbps based on different modulation and error-correcting methods. This capability is attracting keen attention from many carriers and terminal manufacturers as a new technology that will promote increased use of mobile broadband communications.
