Contribution to Environment through Business Activities

Mobile Multimedia Services

As a major corporation, DOCOMO's business inevitably consumes large amounts of power, resulting in the production of CO2 emissions. At the same time, however, the company's mobile multimedia services enable people and commerce to operate more efficiently, with the effect of reduced CO2 emissions.

In its medium- to long-term goals for environmental protection, DOCOMO has made a group-wide commitment to lowering its CO2 emissions through measures designed to achieve greater efficiencies for both customers and society as a whole.

Environmentally Friendly Mobile Phones

DOCOMO was involved in the development of the world's first mobile phone using a kenaf fiber-reinforced bioplastic for the phone's body (FOMA N701iECO). Kenaf bioplastics not only are more environmentally friendly than bioplastics made from polylactate, they offer better heat resistance and more strength.

DOCOMO has successfully tested rechargeable batteries that are one-fourth the size of conventional batteries, yet deliver more than twice the level of power. In the future, this technology will support the development of handsets powered by micro fuel-cells that DOCOMO is developing in partnership with other companies. Fuel-cells will provide commercial handsets with an exceptionally efficient and long-lasting source of power based on the green principle of extracting hydrogen fuel from water.

Recycling Mobile Phones

DOCOMO began collecting mobile phones in 1998. In 2001, mobile carriers and manufacturers teamed up to create the Mobile Recycle Network, which allows users to return any used phone to any company in the network. The program has achieved a measure of success based on the cooperation of the general public.

DOCOMO educates users about the benefits of returning their used mobile phones, such as the 100% recovery of gold, silver, copper, palladium and other precious metals. In addition to its initiatives to raise the phone collection rate, DOCOMO has implemented special measures to ensure the protection and proper disposal of any personal information remaining in discarded phones.

Protecting the Natural Environment

docomo Woods

Under the “docomo Woods” program, the NTT DOCOMO Group has been helping to preserve the natural environment by contributing to the reforestation of Japan since 1999. Plantings had taken place in all 47 prefectures as of June 2010.

The program also includes DOCOMO volunteers going into local communities to conduct nature classes that help people develop a greater appreciation of the natural environment.

Agroforestry in Sumatra

Forests on the Indonesian island of Sumatra have been diminishing by about 2.5% every year due deforestation and conversion into agricultural land since the 1970s. One way to counter this trend is agroforestry, which combines agriculture and reforestation by growing crops together with compatible trees and shrubs. Working with the Conservation International, a nongovernmental organization, DOCOMO provided support for agroforestry in Sumatra from 2004 to September 2007. People were taught how to cultivate crops while growing coffee trees to make a living without cutting down trees, also how to manage harvests and develop sales channels. The result has been the creation of more sustainable communities in Sumatra.
